Acrylic acid (propionic acid) is an organic compound with the formula CH2 = CHCOOH. This compound is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid that consists of a vinyl group directly attached to the end of the carboxylic acid. This colorless liquid has a specific smell and is miscible with water, alcohol, ethers and chloroform. Acrylic acid is a colorless and transparent liquid, which, due to its chemical structure, facilitates the combination with the large chain of polymer compounds. This material is highly corrosive to most metals such as steel, copper, silver, and brass; But it is compatible with stainless steel. Acrylic acid reacts with a carboxylic acid and when it reacts with an alcohol, it forms its ester. Acrylic acid esters and salts are generally known as acrylates (or propionates). Acrylic acid and its esters are easily combined by reacting with their double bonds (in the form of polyacrylic acid) or other monomers (for example, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, vinyl compounds, styrene, and butadiene) to form their own homopolymers or copolymers. which are used in the manufacture of various plastics, coatings, adhesives, elastomers, as well as floor coverings and paints.
Acrylic acid has a molecular weight of 72, a melting point of 13.5°C, a density of 1.045 g/ml, a flash point of 68°C, a critical temperature of 380°C, and a critical pressure of 5.06 MPa. This substance can be dissolved in water, alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform and acetone. Its melting point is 14°C and its boiling point is 139°C. This material is sensitive to heat and direct sunlight and easily catches fire at a temperature of 68 °C in the vicinity of open air. This substance is very corrosive in dealing with most metals such as copper, iron, brass and silver, and stainless steel tanks are generally used for its storage. This liquid is best kept at a temperature between 15 and 25 °C.
